Statement from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Vaisakhi

April 14, 2023

Ottawa, ON — The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Vaisakhi:

“Three centuries ago, Guru Gobind Singh gathered Sikhs from across India amidst a period of severe persecution. Guided by God’s instruction, on the first day of the month of Vaisakh in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh established the Khalsa – the Army of the Immaculate.

“As demonstrated by the Five Beloved Ones, this new order of Sikhs would live in faithful service to the ideals of their religion, following specific disciplines that would set them apart as God’s visible servants. Today, Sikhs worldwide continue to wear the Five Ks, dedicating themselves to purity, justice, obedience, and selfless service to others.

“On Vaisakhi, Sikhs celebrate the inauguration of the Khalsa, gathering with their community in gurdwaras all around the country. Together, they listen to kirtans, read sacred Scriptures, and reflect on the timeless values of peace and charity.

“In the spirit of these values, Sikhs faithfully hold langars, working to feed the hungry, correct injustice and extend hope to those who have fallen on hard times. Vaisakhi also coincides with the time of harvest in India, inspiring generosity and thankfulness for the many blessings we receive.

“Canada is proud to be the home of many Sikhs, who make up a higher proportion of the population here than in any other country. Their gurdwaras continue to serve as beacons of light within our communities as they work to uplift others. Vaisakhi is an excellent opportunity for Canadians to recognize the incredible contributions Sikhs have made to our country.

“On behalf of the Conservative Party of Canada and to all those celebrating today, Happy Vaisakhi! Vaisakhi diyan lakh lakh vadhaiyan!”
